WOGB Artist Spotlight: Rob Anthony Revisits Musical Roots

Music has the ability to reach people on the most intimate level.  It’s the cheerleader when things have gone right. The romantic poet swooning about love. The lyrical counselor during bouts of emotional pain. Music’s innate ability to connect emotionally to humanity gives the art a unique quality not found anywhere else. With that connection in mind, local singer-songwriter Rob Anthony is revisiting his own musical roots.

Anthony understands that his journey in music has been influenced by those who came before him. In order to grow in his own artistry, the songwriter has begun a journey paying homage to the legendary voices of his youth. According to Anthony, “I don’t think there are too many things I relate to more now-a-days than these words sang so truthfully…” 

The Appleton singer-songwriter has released two videos thus far and intends on creating a documentary as well.

Standing Room Only At Mile Of Music Kickoff

It’s Thursday afternoon and crowds are already gathering for the early Mile of Music performances in downtown Appleton. Singer-songwriter Rob Anthony drew a big lunchtime crowd at Copper Rock Coffee Co. The audience overflowed the space, with guests peeking between one another to see the artist.

His music, described as an acoustic instrumentation with a rock edge, left the audience clapping after each and every song.

“Like Rob said, if you told him he would be doing this 25 years ago, he wouldn’t have believed you but he would’ve been dreaming about it,” said Karla Funk, who has been friends with Anthony since high school.

“It’s fantastic,” said Dana Koutnik, who stepped out on her lunch break to watch the performance. “Every kind of music lover is here.”

The Evolution Of Rob Anthony

It’s hard to imagine the bearded Anthony, a musician best known for his solo acoustic shows and recent tour experience with the BoDeans, started his career in a metal band at age seventeen. Four years passed before Anthony picked up an acoustic guitar and branched out into songwriting.

“It wasn’t until I matured a bit,” he said “that I heard what people were saying in songs and how they spoke to me instead of just the musicality of the guitar parts. A night of good surprises – arrive in Park City, UT for a long weekend and see the BoDeans are playing 3-nights at the historic Egyptian Theater right there on Main St. Always wanted to see these guys, so it was a pre-Halloween treat. Surprised this truly great venue let me in with my camera gear sans photo pass. And surprised and happy to see Kenny Aronoff back behind the BoDeans drum kit doing his usually amazing job. Channel 5 WFRV Features Rob Anthony

Since he started this version of Rock Garden Studio in the early 2000′s, Golde has worked with countless local and national acts. That includes singer/songwriter Rob Anthony.

Anthony has traveled the country with his music, but says Golde’s “old school” techniques really make Rock Garden Studio stand out.

“The sound you get out of it –  all I can say is – it’s a great warm, organic sound that really enhances my song writing and the acoustic vision that I have for it,” Anthony said.

Even as technology continues to evolve Golde relies on vintage equipment to get that really rich sound. He even has the ability to record on analog tape.

“It isn’t for everybody, but in the end you have something valuable that could never happen again. A computer can repeat itself over and over again – a band can’t,” Golde said.  ”Ya know, there’s a special spark that happened in this moment – we caught it and that’s the magic.  That’s what you look for.”

Artists such has Bob Dylan, Neil Young and even Limp Bizkit have recorded albums on Golde’s 1970′s vintage counsel.  Among all the famous musicians recorded on the retro equipment, one album in particular sealed the deal for Golde. > Click here for full story & video

Rob Anthony joins Bodeans for 2015 tour

7/21/15 – The BoDeans have long been a source of pride for Wisconsin music fans. When the band headlines Waterfest in Oshkosh on July 30, there will be another reason for Fox Valley fans in particular to be proud.

As has been the case with more than a dozen shows this summer, the BoDeans will be joined on stage by Appleton musician Rob Anthony.

“It’s been cool, man. It’s great,” said Anthony, a singer-songwriter and longtime presence in the Fox Cities music scene. “I’ve always liked the BoDeans. I grew up listening to them. Playing with the guys in the band, there’s something to be said for that. We’ve got Kenny Aronoff in the band, whose played with (John) Fogerty and (John) Mellencamp. Just a lot of talent. All the guys have played with a lot of big bands.”

PATHS Program Raise Your Voice A Success

6/30/15 – This past season, students in our PATHS program got to participate in a unique program called Raise Your Voice. Fox Valley favorites Rob Anthony and Nicole Rae from The Traveling Suitcase, helped students write their own songs and learn about themselves along the way.

This unique program is just one of many throughout the year that allow the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center to serve as a gathering place for the community and to engage in education opportunities. By reaching out to students who may have limited access to experience the arts outside of this program, we are excited to bring the arts directly to them and learn together.

“Our students, these future songwriters, have not only put smiles on our faces but brought warmth and sunlight to our hearts. Rob Anthony releases new single

3/20/15 – Earlier this year, in his first sessions with the band in over five years, Rob Anthony started laying tracks on what will be his 6th studio album release.

“It got spiritual”, anthony admits, “When energies connect on a musical level it’s unlike any other experience. In a short while I’ll be releasing these new songs to the world. In a short while I’ll, once again, remember why I do what I do.” 

Since the release of his fifth solo album ‘While The World Sleeps’ followed by a severe throat injury leaving him with a year long struggle through vocal therapy Anthony is excited to return with the band releasing what he calls “a mix of midwestern Americana songs with a touch of caribbean flavor.”

Wrapped in a blanket of Americana allure, tugging on a few heartstrings, Rob Anthony leaves us with the sense of an artist who reaches into the soul, grabs the struggles of the inner man, and weaves it into a solid personal connection.

Rob Anthony joins the Bodeans in Mexico

11/30/14 – Rob Anthony has been asked to join the Bodeans playing acoustic in their band in Mexico. If you know Anthony’s music you know his respect for the Bodeans.

Record numbers set for Special Olympics

9/20/14 – Drumroll please! A record-shattering $121,000 with 165 trucks driving from Richfield to Oshkosh, WI. Rob Anthony performed at the 10th annual Worlds Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics. Down The Road is dedicated every year to National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, and was written about drivers and the life they lead as they move their load Down The Road.

$500,000 raised for the American Red Cross.

2/24/14 – Rob Anthony’s good friend Jody Weyers of the American Red Cross – Northeast Wisconsin Region, danced in the Dancing with Our Stars for the American Red Cross on Valentine’s weekend. She not only killed it, but won Peoples Choice Award. It was an amazing night to say the least.

When Jody started her adventure over four months ago, she never thought it would have the impact that it has had on her life. Her goal was to raise $40,000 through their 40 for 40 concert held in early February. The event was a huge success and raised just over $54,000. “I was humbled and honored to be a part of the event. And, I am very proud of Jody,” says Anthony.

Finally, the Dancing with Our Stars for the American Red Cross raised $500,660 in total. That is an amazing amount of funds, which will be used to help those in our local area. 11/20/13 – Rob Anthony had a fairly productive 2012/2013 touring supporting his fifth solo album release, Is This The Plan. This year, Anthony has an equally hectic schedule, with plans to release a new song as part of his ‘Studio H Sessions’ every month leading up to a full-length release. For this month Anthony has unveiled “That Sweet Good Lovin”.

The Americana musician brings a Caribbean flavor to his latest release coupled with his signature acoustic guitar. Wrapped in a blanket of raspy allure, Anthony’s song highlights the longing everyone wants when it comes to love. (“Why does it come and go, no one really knows, that sweet good lovin”).

Mile of Music succeeds in its debut

8/9/13 – Opening the headlining event of Mile Of Music was hometown favorite Rob Anthony. A soulful singer-songwriter, Anthony brought the audience many of his best in Americana from his career as well as new music; pair them alongside excellent acoustic guitar and the performance speaks for itself.

Rob Anthony kicks off 2013′s EAA to 20,000

8/1/2013 - Rob Anthony was welcomed back kicking off opening night with the legendary band Chicago to an audience of 20,000 at the EAA Airventure 2013 “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration” in Oshkosh WI.

In a recent interview with classic rock radio station 103.9 WVBO Rob mentioned performing with such a legendary act, “It was an honor sharing the stage with Chicago and the Steve Miller band last year. It’s not very hard to find the influence of these legends within my latest two-disc album release “Is This The Plan”. From Springsteen’s blue collar working man masterpieces to Mellencamp’s heartland acoustic rock to the classic country rock sounds of the Eagles.”

These influences spread deep & wide through songs such as ‘Down The Road’ (a trucking tribute song to those who move the world along day to day and to the families who await their safe return), ‘We All Need’ (a tribute to Special Olympians who encourage and inspire us to be the best we can be during life’s toughest challenges), The honest and truthful experiences of growing up in the midwest with ‘Is This The Plan’ while also conveying his small town roots to past struggles only to find true meaning through the power of song along side 37 more americana, folk acoustic, heartland rock songs.

Rob Anthony to perform at Mile Of Music Festival

6/25/13 – Mile of Music rounded out its Featured Stage lineup with a number of performers with Fox Valley ties.

Rob Anthony, The Guilty Wanted, Redhawks, Nicole Rae and the Traveling Suitcase and the Sleepwalkers are among the acts that will open shows set at Lawrence University’s Stansbury Theater during the Aug. 8-11 event in downtown Appleton Wisconsin.

Dancers Show Off Moves To Help Crisis Center

6/3/2013 – People showed off their dancing skills Saturday night for a good cause. It was all for the fundraiser called “Shall We Dance.” The event benefits the Sexual Assault Crisis Center of the Fox Cities. The event took place at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton Wisconsin.

All of the proceeds will go to the crisis center. Organizers said they’re happy about how this year’s fundraiser turned out.

Special guests included singer/songwriter “Rob Anthony”, three dancers from “So You Think You can Dance” and top ten “American Idol” finisher Gina Glocksen.

Amongst the many winners of the evenings grand prize auctioning one winners won a VIP limo trip to beautiful Ledgestone Vineyards for a night of wine tasting with a special performance by Rob Anthony Thursday June 27th.

So maybe I’m just on my way to driving myself nuts like most artists.”

A taste of americana with a serving of heart

11/16/12 – Americana ~ the term broadly describes all the various musical styles that form together to create the musical landscape of America, including but not entirely limited to: folk, country, blues and rock. Alternative Country is also another term for this style of music, or “alt- country.” To be fair then, classifying a musician in this vein is to essentially say you can’t really fit them into one specific niche. But since most of us want to identify with the type of music we listen to, and this landscape is relatively broad and welcoming, we can safely find room here in “Americana” and say hello to Rob Anthony.

When I met him at á’Bravo Bistro & Wine Bar in Green Bay, Wis., I quickly realized he was a down to earth guy. Heroes in music: Rob Anthony

The recent tragedies in Colorado and Wisconsin bring us full circle in regards to the frailty of human life. While many show support for those involved in the wake of tragedy, there are some who make the effort to help others long before tragedy strikes.

One such hero can be found in local Wisconsin musician Rob Anthony. A talented and versatile guitar player, Anthony has long supported many causes in his career and what becomes apparent when you listen to the songs Anthony has composed is the heartfelt dedication to them.
